March 29, 2012 - Cry it out, day 5

Wow! I can't believe it worked. Well he's not sleeping through the night or anything, but he is going down much easier. This morning he was being so annoying, I couldn't put him down for one minute to do the dishes or go to the bathroom, he was tired and wouldn't sleep in the stroller. So I put him in the crib, crying, said sweet dreams and have him a kiss, he cried...but he slept, didn't cry for more than 15 minutes. For the evening nap, he cried for an even shorter length of time. For bedtime, he didn't cry at all. He slept for about an hour and a half before waking the first time. It is definately a work in progress!

This afternoon the Baby and I went to pick up things to make marshmallow pops for the Sparks Easter party on Monday. Then we walked around the mall for a bit. I picked up more Camilla drops for his teething/irritability, they seem to work for him when he is in pain or inconsolable. I wish I'd had them when the others were babies!

I am practicing french braids on the Girl's hair.  The attempt above was supposed to be on the side like Katniss in the Hunger Games.  It turned out alright, but a little loose!

March 27, 2012 - It's like pulling teeth!

Today the Boy had to have two more teeth pulled.  It is hard to watch him have such an uncomfortable procedure.  He gets the laughing gas, so this takes the edge off for him and he sits through the procedure like a champ!  One of the teeth was a loose baby tooth, so that got pulled fairly easy.  The other tooth was a baby tooth that was not loose or ready to be removed.  However, he had to have it removed to make room for his adult tooth that was already coming in.  The tooth did not come out easy!  The dentist really had to pull hard to get it out.  I felt bad watching him, although he seemed fine, because he was playing games on my iPod during the procedure, and the only thing that annoyed him was the dentist and hygienest in the way of him seeing the screen!!

After the dentist, I went to my old workplace to have lunch with my friend, it was a nice lunch and a great visit.  The Baby behaved and even slept on the subway coming home so I could read my book!

March 28, 2012 - Avocado! Yumm-o!

Today Baby had avocado for the first time.  He loved it!  It was so easy to make and turned out really creamy and soft for his mouth.  I can't believe that I never offered it to the other kids!  I am still amazed at how easy it is to make my own baby food, and just the fact that my food looks and tastes like the actual fruit and vegetables that the rest of the family eats during our meals.  The jarred baby food, doesn't remotely look like the food we eat.  Check for yourselves!  Puree some peas and check the colour, and then compare it to a jar of baby peas from the grocery store.   I am not sure what else goes into those jars, but it can't be just peas or it would look the same.

March 26, 2012 - Oops!

Today was Monday...I don't know why but I completely forgot that today the Girl had Sparks.  Well, I forgot until 7:15pm when it was too late to take her.  I felt awful!   I don't know if it is the lack of sleep or the back to back off weeks (the march break and then the following week the Husband was on holidays) or if I am just a dumbass having a bad Mommy moment.  In any case, I apologized and she took it rather well.  Now I just have to remember that the next week she has a party for Easter at Sparks and I need to send a treat:)

On another note, I had an appointment with the lactation consultant today, the good news is Baby weighs 15 lbs and 11 ounces, meaning he is gaining about 20 grams a day...good for us!  We are slowly introducing solids, which is a good thing.  But the bad news is that the medication that they prescribed for helping with the milk supply has been placed on the waring list by Health Canada (according to the Doctor there) and therefore she wants to start weaning me from it.  Now, I believe that this medication is really helping me, and although the study that was conducted by the group in France that prompted Health Canada to issue the warning had a bad reaction with 70 year old women, with pre-exsisting heart conditions, I still feel that I want to continue with the medicine for as long as possible.  Deep down I was hoping to breast feed until he was over a year old.  Now I am wondering if I can keep that up with out the medicine, or if the medicine has just been helping, and I can do it myself if I keep up the regular feedings (replacing some with pumping sessions).  I have enough medication to last a couple of months, but I return to the clinic in a couple of weeks.  We'll see how it is going then.

March 25, 2012 - Cry it out, Day 1

Tonight we decided to try the Ferber technique to get Baby to sleep in his crib. Apparently we did this with the Girl, however I can't remember even going through it. I guess that's a good thing. So we decided that we would let him go through the process for an hour tonight and still bring him into our bed when he wakes at 3:00am. It was hard to hear him cry. When I went into he room he was holding my hand tightly and whenever he would fall asleep I would pull my hand away and then he woke up. I hated walking out of the room when he was crying but I know that this is better for him in the long run, and better for the family and us. Hopefully by next week he will be falling asleep on his own when we place him in the crib...that would be dreamy!

March 24, 2012 - Squash

Today the Girl, Baby and I had breaksfast with my Mom, Sister and Aunt.  I hadn't been to my Aunt's new appartment yet, and it was really nice.  Great central location with a nice balcony and comfortable living space.  Her kitty, Sophie, is adorable, she seems to have found a great place to nap in front of the balcony window.  I suppose it is where she has the best view of the place.

When we got home, I roasted the squash for Baby's food.  Then pureed it in the blender to freeze it.  We had a little leftover in the blender, and I let Baby try some, and he liked it!  So far he likes, peas, apples and squash, as well as rice cereal.  He isn't crazy about green beans and carrots.  In a couple of days, I will offer him avacodo!

We went out to a lighting store nearby, we need to find a fixture for our front porch that is slim enough to allow the screen door to pass underneith it.   So far we haven't been lucky at the regular home improvement stores (Home Depot, Lowes and Rona).  We figured that we could find it at a specialty lighting store, but we wrong and they didn't have what we were looking for either.

March 23, 2012 - Wok of Fame

Today was Friday.   It was the last weekday of the Husband's holidays.  He isn't taking any more vacation until May when we go to Florida.  Yeah, Disney!  I don't know who is more excited, me or the kids.  I hope I will feel like a kid again, because lately I have felt in a rut.  I feel like there are not enough hours in the day and when there is enough time, I am so tired, that I don't have the energy to do the things I want to do.  I long to spend some time in my office doing my scrapbooking, but by the time the Baby is sleeping, I am too tired to do anything.  I am having trouble fitting in 15 minutes on the elliptical!!  Also, the house is falling into more disarray.  I am behind in the housework, and I am not in the mood to do it.  This week, I will start to get back on track, buy doing a couple of extra things each day!!

We have been trying to get quotes for a new window in our family room.  It has been hard to get anyone out to the house who is able to do the work.  Companies want to install windows, but they don't want to do the extra work to change a door into a window.  The Husband really wants the wall built up with brick, but the brick will be difficult to match, and one contractor said he could build the wall and cover it with siding.  We'll see what happens.

Today the Baby continued on his quest to be extra needy.  He wouldn't let me put him down so I could do things like cooking or going to the bathroom.  I hope that gets better soon!!

Tonight the Husband took us to the Wok of Fame.  The restaurat opened recently close to our home.  The service was excellent, everyone was very friendly they knew all about hospitality and making their guests feel welcome, the food was also delicious.  The fresh made food while you watch, was especially yummy.  I also really liked the sushi, it was very fresh.  The kids enjoy chinese food, it is one of the restaurants we can go, and the kids will actually eat!

March 22, 2012 - Cranky Baby!

Today was Thursday.  Even though the Husband was on holidays, he had to go to work for a meeting today.  In the morning the Girl and I went to the LW, it is a liquidation warehouse in town, we picked up a few things.  One of the Mom's at the school had mentioned it to me.  She said I could get a good deal on Easter chocolate and on Baby Mum Mums.  She did not lie.  In addition to Easter stuff and Mum Mum's, we picked up some craft things for me and the Girl, along with a pair of Justin Beiber pajamas for the Girl.  We also found a couple of pink baskets for her room (which is almost finished).

The Baby was extra cranky today.  He is teething, we can see the bottom teeth through his gums, they will make an appearance any day now.  Additionally, he is hungry all the time.  He is still feeding every 1.5 to 2.5 hours during the day.  He only sleeps from 11pm to 3am, and then we start the feeding process again.  We have been giving him solids, some veggies, fruit and cereal, however he is not filling up.  I think he is going through his six month growth spurt.

It is hard to comprehend that in a few days the Baby will be six months already?  Really?  I can't believe the time has passed so quickly.  You always say that babies grow up so quickly, and I know this from the other two kids.  When I look at them now, I barely remember them being babies.

March 21, 2012 - Swing Time

Wow! We really lucked out with the weather this week. I decided to cancel grocery shopping in exchanged for an evening at the park while the Boy is at beavers!

This afternoon we took the Baby to the park before picking up the kids and he had fun in the swing. After school I put the older kids to work moving some rocks to make way for a new front pathway that we are going to put in this summer. It seems like I have so many projects that are on my to-do list, I just hope I don't disappoint myself if they don't all get done before my maternity leave is over!

March 20, 2012 - Beautiful Day

Today was a gorgeous day, full of warm spring sunshine.  It was a beautiful first day of spring.  The Husband won a iPad from his work, and we went to pick it up while the kids were at school.  After dinner we went for a short walk to the park to enjoy the last few minutes of a wonderful spring day.

March 19, 2012 - More Visiting and Travel

Today we visited with our friends at their home.  They live in this pretty cottage near lake Erie.  There wasn't much time to look around, and that's too bad because it was a beautiful day.  We had lunch and then it was time to start the journey back home.  The Girl had Sparks and the Boy had his first confession in the evening, so we had to try and make it home for that. We pulled into the city just before 7pm, and the Girl was a little late for Sparks, and the Boy was just a few minutes late for the confession event.

The only part of the weekend that was concerning, was the Baby and his crying in the car.  He slept for short periods of time, but when he was awake he was crying.  This will not work for our trip to Florida.  We are really concerned that he will cry for hours during our trip, and we can't stop every two hours to feed him or we will never make it to Florida!  I just hope that things are better in a couple of months when he is eating more solid foods, otherwise I am going to have to be pumping in the car while he gets a bottle.

March 18, 2012 - Visit day

Today we had a nice visit with our friends at their home near Windsor. The kids got along really well, and were upset when it was time to leave.  It was a nice day full of conversation and laughter.  I could not have asked for a better time.

March 17, 2012 - Wedding

Today was the Windsor wedding.  The reception wasn't until 6pm so we had lots of time to enjoy the beautiful weather.  It was over 20 degrees here in Windsor, and what made the weather more enjoyable, was the 11 degrees that it was in Toronto. Yeah!  We managed to find beautiful weather on our mini vacation:)

We went to Tim Horton's for breakfast and then my Dad and the kids went geocaching in the park along the Detroit river.  The rest of us went to the outlet mall to search for bargains.  I got lucky at the Coach Outlet Store....picking up a small silver purse for $35.  I also had fun at Carters/Osh Kosh, picking up some summer outfits for the Baby and one for each of the Girl and Boy.

After the outlet mall, we met up with the kids and my Dad and went to Burger King for a late lunch.  The the kids and the Husband went for a swim, while the Baby and I watched.  Eventually it was time to get dressed for the wedding reception.

The wedding was fun, we had as much fun as we can with three kids during a reception.  Once we got back to the room, we had a glass of wine and went to bed.

March 16, 2012 - Mini Vacation & Sitting Baby

Today we packed up the car and headed out to Windsor for a wedding.  It is always difficult to pack up when you have a few kids under feet.  I always seem to forget something!  This time was no exception, but luckily for my family I only forgot my things, a swimsuit and my jacket.

Today's photo clearly shows the Baby checking his messages.  Too cute:)

We went for dinner at Bubi's.  It is a restaurant in Windsor that was featured in the show:  "You've got to eat here!".  The show is the Canadian version of "Diner's, Drive-In's and Dives".  Apparently the restaurant is known for their garlic mayonaise.  It was delicious.  The entree portions were huge, it didn't even look like I ate my fajitas, but I really did!!

The Baby is nearly sitting up unassisted.  He can stay sitting for about 5-10 seconds and I know he will quickly learn to stay for longer periods of time.

March 15, 2012 - Wizard's World

For the past three years (maybe longer) the kids have had an annual trip to Wizard's World with their cousin and Aunt.  Normally I am working so the Husband is tasked with taking the kids to the event.  This year as I am off for my maternity/parental leave, I got to go for the first time.  I should mention that throughout the year my daughter utters the words Wizard's World regularly.  Today's trip has been on her radar since we told the kids I would be off for a year after I have the baby.  She was so excited for today, I think she was more excited than for Christmas!
There were rides and bouncy play structures, along with an animal show.  My favourite was the animal show, they had a baby tiger and two baby lions....[insert "ahhhh" now].  They also had a black jaguar, which didn't appear to be the most friendly cat in the jungle.  Plus, I didn't appreciate the way it was looking at the Baby!!
I also loved watching the kids have fun on all the rides, while the kid inside of me wished to join them in the bouncy castle and on the bouncy obstacle course, I watched them from the side and smiled when they slid down the slides, or the ride went extra fast.  Afterall, that is what being a parent is all about!

March 14, 2012 - Geocaching

Today the older kids went geocaching with their G.D.. They were out for a long time, giving me a chance to run some errands with just the Baby.  After geocaching my parents sayed for a visit and dinner.  It was a nice Wednesday afternoon.  The weather was beautiful and sunny.  The kids played with the neighbours kids for a couple of hours and I enjoyed the quiet time.

March 13, 2012 - Belle and the Park

Today was the second day of the March break and we had a busy day.  At 11:00am there was a Beauty and the Beast event at the mall that the Girl wanted to attend.  In addition to the kids, the Girl's friend from down the street came with us.  It was fun for them.  After the event we picked up pizzas and headed home for lunch.

After lunch we went to the park with the kids uncle and cousin.  At the park the Baby went in the swing for the first time.  He loved it as the picture to the left shows!!

March 12, 2012 - Dentist and Princesses

Today we started re-organizing the Girl's room.  She inherited some princess decorations, and we decided to try and fix up her room to make it more princessy!  I got the kids to put all her toys into bins, and then we moved the furniture around a bit.  With kids, things always take longer then they should, so by the time lunch came, we had hardly done anything!

After lunch they had dentist appointments, the Girl was having her first check-up and she did great!  The Boy was getting some molars sealed and also a check-up.  It turns out that his jaw is too small for his teeth, and he will likely have to have lots of teeth pulled and braces later in life.  He was really upset about the braces, and I am not too sure why, I don't think he has ever been exposed to any negativity about braces before.  After all his cousin and two of his aunts have braces!

In all the excitement and rushing around today, I didn't take a photo.  I am really disapointed in myself for missing the day, and unfortunately I didn't even realize I missed the day until well into Tuesday.

March 11, 2012 - The Zoo Baby!

Today we finally made it to the zoo to see the baby animals.  We saw the baby penguin and the baby polar bear.  They were very cute.

We managed to see most of the zoo, which was a lot of fun and a lot of walking!  My legs and feet were very sore by the end of the day.  The kids had a lot of fun, and were excited everytime we approached an exhibit!    The Baby slept for the afternoon, and was cranky before lunch.  Most of all he was bothered by the beautiful sunshine streaming down!

It was a gorgeous day, sunny and warm. We all took our jackets off and enjoyed the first spring day.  The picture of the kids below, shows the Boy with his baby polar bear toy and the Girl with her giraffe toy.  We got the Baby a baby penguin toy to remember the fun day at the zoo.

March 10, 2012 - Party

Today was Saturday, it was a little chilly today, but we made the best of it.  In the late morning, we walked over to the mall to get some odds and ends.  I really needed to mail the Boy`s first communion invitations, as the date was fast approaching.
While we were walking to the mall, the Boy saw one of his school friends, who was also walking to the mall.  It is so great to see him with his friends outside of school, he is definately enjoying living in the same neighbourhood as his school!

In the evening we went to a surprise 40th birthday party.  The kids spent the entire evening playing in the basement with a bunch of other kids, and they had lots of fun.  We got to catch up with old friends, and had a really nice time.

I took the photo on left because I love how the Boy spells things phonetically (LOL...not sure if I spelt that word correct!).  He left the paper on the coffee table, and it took me a couple of minutes to figure out what it was.  In case you can't read what he wrote, it says: "Pokemon Collection".  I love it:)

March 9, 2012 - Friday Night is Cake Night

Today the Husband was off work, it was also the kids last day of school before the March Break.  We didn't have much planned for the day.  In the afternoon we went to the mall and had lunch before we picked up the kids after school.
In the evening my parents came over for coffee and cake.  While they were there my Aunt texted my Mom and I suggested she come over too.  It was a great spontanious visit. Sometimes those evenings are the best!  We had some yummy red velvet cake which we picked up from Metro.  I really liked the cream cheese icing.  Yummy!!

March 8, 2012 - Just Thursday

Today was just Thursday, nothing special going on. Baby had more peas with dinner, he made lots of funny faces but most of the food ended up in his mouth. I got a chance to use my craft room tonight. I made a card for an upcoming celebration. I am enjoying card making, it is kind of like scrapbooking but there is less of a time commitment because I am only doing 2 small pages.

Today Baby also tried the vegetable Baby Mum Mums-he liked them. I am sure that he is going to pop a tooth soon since he is drooling, rashy and cranky. Also when he ate the Mum Mum he took bites where I actually heard crunching!!

March 7, 2012 - Peas!!

Today we gave the Baby peas for the first time.  The other night he enjoyed his cereal and showed that he is definately ready to try more solid foods, even if it is just a couple of tablespoons with dinner.

FYI - the Girl picked out the bib this morning, this photo was in fact taken just a few minutes ago!!  LOL!

March 6, 2012 - Skating and Swimming are finished!

The Girl passed her skating lessons.  It was great to see her doing so well.  I especially liked that she had something to herself.  Her brother wasn't taking skating lessons, so she didn't have any competition from him, instead she did great, stayed positive and kept a smile on her face while she did everything her instructor asked.  I love that when she fell, she got back up and tried again, and that is what I ask of my kids.  They need to practice the things they want to do well, keep trying to do the things they aren't good at and get back up and smile when they fall down.  After school we went to their last swimming class.  The Boy and Girl both passed their levels and gained more confidence in their abilities.  I am proud of the Boy who spent the majority of his weekly lessons doing lengths of the pool, last year he complained that he was too tired to do the lengths, and this year he never complained once.  He is slowly building up his stamina and ability to work on the one thing for a long period of time.   This skill will hopefully spill over to his school work, where he spends as little time as possible completing his assignments.  The Baby has been very cranky the last few days, I am wondering if he is finally going to cut a tooth or if it is another growth spurt.  He has been feeding every 1-2 hours during the daytime for the last week or so, it kind of snuck up on me, so I only really begain to keep track of it the last couple of days.  Today he breastfed at 5am, 7am, 9am, 11am, 1pm, 2:30pm, 4pm, 5pm, 6pm, 7:30pm.  Then he had a bottle at 8pm (4oz) and slept for about 20 minutes.  When he woke I couldn't settle him and gave him another 3oz, he finally crashed out.  The photo above for today shows him fast asleep in our bed.  He looked so adorable I had to include a photo.

I realized that today's blog is pretty long, and although I might write about the mundane activities of my life, I will treasure reading about them when Baby is older and the other kids will love to remember how much they made him happy.  I also hope that someday, when the Girl and Boy recall my maternity leave, they will remember all the things I did with them over the year, and that not everything revolved around the Baby.

March 5, 2012

Today winter was back with avengence.  It was -13 this morning, feeling like -20, with the wind chill.  While the kids were at school I had to go to the mall. Since our vacation was booked, I needed to bite the bullet and buy a swim suit.  I saw some nice ones on the Old Navy website, so I went there.  I managed to pick up two of them.  They look alright, and a bonus is no one outside my family will have to see me in it!  It turns out that the Baby doesn't like Old Navy because he cried really loudly while I was in the change room.  Clothes shopping is difficult with a baby unless the baby is asleep while you are trying on the clothes!

I also headed over to Home Outfitters to pick up some items from the gift registry for the wedding I am going to in a couple of weeks.  It was not an easy thing!  I wish the registry had better descriptions of the items and that they were easier to find in the store.  I was successful and then it was almost time to get the kids from school.

Today at Sparks, the Girl went to a Pottery Studio.  She made a piece of art that will get fired and then she will get to paint it at her next Sparks meeting.  She had a lot of fun, as she always does when she is doing creative things.

March 4, 2012

Today we went to a birthday party in Keswick at the kids cousins house. They always have so much fun playing with their cousins.  The Boy especially was excited to play with his male cousin, since they are the only two boys (besides the Baby).  Everything was great and I think she liked her gift.  We went to Build-a-Bear and made her a Hello Kitty stuffed toy.  It was fun for us to make it and I hope it finds a special place in her room.

The Baby was a little overwelmed at first, there was so many people and he cried a little.  I don't remember the Boy or Girl going through any stranger anxiety.  Actually, I'm not sure it was a "stranger thing", I think it was more like a "not with Mommy" thing.  He warmed up to everyone after a while and was really great.

I like today's photo because it shows how much Baby is learning to play.  He was reaching for the ball and then dropping down onto his lap.  The ball kept rolling around on his high chair, and he was getting frustrated when he couldn't reach it.

March 3, 2012 - Windy Day

Today we were supposed to go to the zoo with the kids Aunt, but it was very windy and the weather wasn't very nice to be outside.  Instead we went to their Aunts house and the kids swam.  Then we went to lunch at the Sunset Grill.  I had a bacon mushroom cheeseburger and fries, the Boy had french toast and the Girl had grilled cheese and homefries.  My burger was yummy but a little greasy and messy. It was very large, I didn't finish my fries.  The Boy ate all of his french toast (two large pieces) along with one of his Aunt's leftover pancakes.  The Girl at about half of her grilled cheese and almost none of her homefries (I probably should have given her my fries and taken her homefries).
The kids had lots of fun swimming, next time if I have a bathing suit, I will take the Baby into the water, we just watched from the side.  The kids are much more comfortable in the water now, and the Boy has lots of confidence, maybe a little too much.  He even dove into the deep end!  I'm going to have to keep an eye on him.

March 2, 2012

I hate shopping for clothes for myself.  I actually dread it.  Nothing I like fits, and usually I can't find anything I like.  It takes forever for me to find just one outfit.  I would much rather shop for the kids, and whenever I am out to get an article of clothing for myself, I usually come home with something for one of the kids.  Today was no exception.  But I kind of had a good reason why I had trouble.  There was nothing in the mall for nursing mothers.  I checked with the maternity store, and they don't carry anything (formal or semi formal) for non-pregnant nursing mothers.  Most of their clothing is for pregnant women that they can wear to nurse after they give birth.

So I decided I would search for a dress or blouse that had either a cross-over look or buttons, so that I could descreetly remove part of my top to nurse while I am at a wedding reception in a couple of weeks.  Well tried on a few dresses that had that "cross over/wrap" look, and with my nursing boobs they practically fall out, and it is not a look that I like.  There wasn't any dresses or blouses that had buttons at all, it was very disapointing.  Why hasn't someone targeted this audience?  Wouldn't a store like Sears, The Bay or even a higher end maternity store like Thyme, invest in products that women might wear for a year or more after their child is born?  Afterall we buy maternity wear that we use for about 6 monts only....Seems as though there is a missing market here!

I ended up buying  a skirt and an inexpensive shirt that I am going to modify to make it more accessible for nursing.  If anyone knows of a store where I can buy pretty (grown-up) nursing clothes that are not meant for pregnant women, please let me know!

March 1, 2012 - 5 months old today:)

Today the Baby is 5 months old. I can't believe how big he is getting.  In some ways time seems to be moving way too fast, and in other ways it seems like the Baby has always been here.  He is just so cuddly and happy.  I love waking up and seeing him fast asleep beside me.  I love when he smiles at random strangers.  I love it when the older kids make him laugh.  I also love how the Boy and the Girl take care of him, and help out around the house.  The Baby has so many people who love him and take care of him, and he is so lucky!

Today's photos show two different sides of Baby.  The top one is of him blowing raspberries.  He is a very talented raspberry blower!  They are often very juicy and anyone in close proximity may be in the wet zone!  The photo blow shows his more calm and content side.
Today we had dinner with my parents, it was nice.  I made pulled pork sandwiches.  We really like the pulled pork from M&M Meats.  I saute some mushrooms and onions, and add them to the meat on toasted rolls.  Then I put on some shredded mozzerella cheese, and pop it back into the oven to make the cheese all melty.

I think I am going to try to make my own pulled pork in the slow cooker, I found a pretty easy recipe, and best of all the slow cooker will do all the work!

February 29, 2012

Today was Wednesday.  The Boy has Beavers and I walk to and from the school 5 times!  It was a good day.  Today we woke to snow.  There hasn't been much this winter, so when it does snow the kids get excited.  I took the Boy to school this morning, and got covered in blowing wet snow.  He was excited because it was his teacher's birthday.  He was looking forward to her birthday since the beginning of the year.  We picked up a yummy chocolate covered caramel apple from Rocky Mountain Chocolates to give as a gift.  It looked really good, and I should have picked up an extra one for me, because a girl's got to get her 8-10 fruits and vegetables per day, right?
