June 29, 2012 - Last day of school

So today was the last day of school. I no longer have a kindergartner and a grade 2 student. I'm not sure if I'm ready for this school year to be over.  There were tears by everyone.  The Girl was sad because one of her friends was crying, kindergarten is a big deal for those kids, and they will miss spending time with their friends over the summer.  I didn't expect the Boy to be tearful.  He was crying when I picked him up.  He gave his teacher a second hug before we sat down and chatted about his day.  His best friend is moving (today apparently) so he was really upset about not getting to see him today and give him the card he made.  I suggested that he ask his friend to be his pen pal, that way he could practice his writing and keep in touch with his friend, but he never got to ask because the friend wasn't at school today.

The Boy on his first day of Grade Two.

I distinctly remember the first day of school back in September. I was 8 months pregnant and it was rainy. We were in they gym waiting for the teachers to read their assignments. The Girl was excited but had to wait until the afternoon to meet her teacher. The Boy did not want to start at the new school. He wanted to go back to his old school with his old friends. He was in tears and it was really hard to leave him there. When he doesn't know people he acts tough and can be rude to people. I was afraid that he made a horrible first impression and wouldn't have any friends for the entire year.
It was a long couple of weeks, most nights he went to bed in tears asking if he could go back to his old school. That was hard to hear. The teacher thought he might have ADD, but we weren't convinced. We figured he was just having a hard time adapting to all the changes in his life (new school, friends, baby). We were right. By mid-October he was making some friends and was feeling better about school. The teachers opinion of him changed and he was doing better (although still with focus issues). Now he seams to have lots of friends, many people in the school know him (kids and teachers). He's being invited to birthday parties and he made a couple of best friends. I'm proud of him for working through his issues and doing so well at grade two. He even got an A+ in science. His chemist grandparents must be very proud:)

The Girl was in a class with just 5 other girls. She made friends with all the girls in her class and good friends with some of the boys. She never had any issues with a new school and was always happy and bubbly when I dropped her off. I am so proud of her because she is doing well in her reading and her writing. I know she is ready for grade one and is so close to learning to read independently.

I am filled with conflicting emotions when I think about the year ending. First of all I loved every minute of dropping off and picking up the kids at school. All those Moms who work outside the home know what I mean and until this year I never really got to pick then up from school. I wasn't the one they came running out to hug. Was I envious of the person who got to pick up my kids, yes, but I understood that it was all part of the life I had chosen for my family. Will I miss it when I go back to work? Most definately. I love hearing about their day and what interesting things they did and learned. But, I am not going to miss all the nagging I have to do. Sometimes I feel like that is all I do, nagging them to do this or that. I wish more of my time with them could have been relaxing and having snuggles while reading stories. But I guess I don't have that picture perfect family where the house stays clean and dinner cooks itself and babies don't scream and just sit quietly while you do all your chores. I think once I go back to work I will be more tired, I will have to take care of many of the same things, just with less time in the day. I will be happy to spend my day with adults again (not counting the undergrad students!!). The one thing that work brings me, besides a proper income, is time to miss the kids. I don't get that when I am with them 24/7.

So as we embark on our summer vacation, my first and probably last summer where I get to spend every day with my kids, I am excited and sad that the school year ended.  It means that I am only a few months away from going back to work and missing my kids all day.  We are going to work on our summer bucket list and hopefully have some amaxing adventures together.  Hopefully it will be a summer to remember.

June 28, 2012 - Party Preparations

I am trying to get ready for our Canada Day BBQ on Sunday, but with the Baby still teething and no tooth in sight it's been really hard. He is still crying alot and not eating.

The kids are excited for the last day of school tomorrow. The Girl just realized that tomorrow is he last day without the Boy and then she won't have me mostly to herself. She has really benefitted with the last few months without the Boy and has gained some independence. She has been so helpful with the Baby and never complains when I ask for her help.

June 27, 2012 -Teething Finally

Today the Baby really started teething! He was very clingy and cried almost all day. We gave him some tempra before bed and that helped a bit. But he hasn't been eating well and wants to nurse all the time again. I am tired.

June 26, 2012 - Report Card Day

Today the kids brought home their report cards. I am proud of both of them. The Boy even had some improvements since the first term. The teacher said recently his writing has improved a lot. He needs to practice writing over the summer to keep it up and get better. I am going to continue working on reading with the Girl over the summer too. I plan on having them
work on their books over the summer to keep their brains from turning to mush!!

June 25, 2012 - Last Monday of the School Year!

Today is the last Monday of this school year, thank goodness.  I am looking forward to the summer with the kids, but on the other hand, I hope I am able to keep them busy for the 8 weeks off, so that we don't all go crazy!
The kids gave their presents for their teachers today, and it made them so happy (the kids and I assume the teachers too).  I took a page from Pinterest and I bought plastic straw cups and filled them with crystal light and tetlea tea infusions, and then added a little tag that said: Thank you for quenching my thirst for knowledge this year!  It was really simple and I think the total cost for all four gifts was about $20.

June 24, 2012 - Rough Night

The last few nights with Baby have been rough.  He takes a long time to go down and then only sleeps for about 4 hours.  When he wakes he has a hard time going back to sleep.  The worst part is since he is in our bed, neither of us sleep really well.  One of us gets their face scratched and pulled while the other gets kicked in the face.  He is often up for two hours when he wakes.  I have read that when babies learn a new skill they often have a hard time sleeping after.  The last couple of weeks were busy for him.

June 23, 2012 - Clapping

Today we went to the Farmer's Market.  We picked up some yummy local strawberries, cherries and some more cheese from Thornloe.  We also got some butter tarts from Andrew's Scenic Acres

After the market, the Husband cleaned out the shed, which was starting to smell from the eggs that the raccoon left in there last week.  It was nice to have it organized, we never really did anything with it since we moved into the house, just kind of threw things in there.  I have to admit he did a great job and I can't wait to garden in the back yard now that I have a gardening station in the shed.

Today the Baby clapped for the first time.  It is so adorable when he does these new things.  I love watching his face light up and get so excited when everyone else is excited.  It is quite contagious.

June 22, 2012 - One week of school left

Today after school the kids went into the pool, the water temperature has dropped a little with the less humid air temperature.  Today my Aunt came over for dinner and we had a really nice visit, as ususal the kids get super excited when someone comes over!  It's kind of cute and annoying at the same time because it is so hard to calm them down again!

The Baby is getting really good at crawling, he can ge where he wants to go in a short period of time.  He is also able to go from sitting right over to a crawl, (he doesn't need to start out on his belly anymore).  Once he gets where he wants to go, he can get back to a sitting position.

He is working on getting down to a sitting position from standing.  He pulls himself up to the table, sofa or whatever he can, and then he is sort of stuck there until he tries to get back down.  A few times he kind of fell, and I suppose he didn't really like that because now he slowly lowers himself until he is really close to the ground, then he stays there for a bit (I think he is stuck).  All he needs to do is drop the other half inch and he'd be sitting safely on the ground.

In today's photos the Baby is playing picnic with the Girl, it was so cute, they really had fun:)

June 21, 2012 - Last day of the heatwave

Today was the last day of our first heatwave of the summer.  I like the warm weather, don't get me wrong.  I like it better than the super cold winters with the horrible wind chills.  But it is hard with the Baby to keep him cool.  Even with the air conditioning I am still hot while nursing and holding him.  He must not have the same feelings towards the warm weather, because he still wants to snuggle and be held all day.  I know I should enjoy the snuggles because I have been told that eventually my kids won't want to snuggle with me anymore.  I have asked both the Boy and the Girl promise to never stop cuddling with me, and they have agreed, so I think I will get cuddles forever!!  I am working on my self portrait skills, I took today's photo and I think I got the angle right.

June 20, 2012 - First Day of Summer

Today is the first day of summer, and it is a scorcher.  I think it is going to feel like it is 48 degress or something.  But really anything over 33 degrees is hot, so this is just torture.  I told the Girl she couldn't go in the pool this morning because it was too hot outside for the Baby and he's not liking the pool!  He screams when we put him in, I think the water is just too cold for him.

The Baby had a good nap this afternoon in his crib, however it was too hot (even in the house with air conditioning) to do anything much.

After school, I made the kids clean up the family room because the Baby had been putting little toys in his mouth all day, and when I had to remove the third one, it was the last straw.  The new rule in the family room, is nothing that will fit into a toilet paper roll tube is allowed in the room.  They were a little upset about this, but they can play in the basement, they just don't want to for some reason.

I wouldn't let the kids go outside in the pool because it was too hot for me and the Baby to sit outside.  Instead they put on a fashion show, the photo above of the Boy as Tinkerbell was the grand finale of the show.

After dinner I went in the pool for the first time this year.  With all the warm weather we've been having the pool tempearture was up to 84 degrees last night.  I was joined in the pool by the Boy and had some one-on-one time with him.  The Girl came later (after she tidied her room).

June 19, 2012 - Jam Packed Tuesday

Today was the first day of our first heat wave of the summer.  The temperature was about 34 celsius, warmer with the humidex.  The Girl went swimming before school!  Nursing a hot baby when it is so hot and sticky out is not a very enjoyable experience.  The last thing I want to do is hold the hot and sticky baby in this weather.  The Baby did remarkably well in the hot weather, drinking lots of water, and eating a little less (which I assume is normal).  We went to the mall in the afternoon and I bought shorts for myself.  I haven't worn shorts outside of the house in years, but since it is so hot, and I am off on maternity leave this summer, I figured they might get a little more use this summer.  I was actually glad, because with capris on I would have died in the heat today!

We were late picking up the kids because we got stuck in a construction zone on the way to the school.  I actually had to call the school and ask to pick them up in the office.  This was the first time this whole school year that I was late!  Not bad:)  This evening we had both the end of school BBQ and the kid had baseball games.  The BBQ was nice, it was a chance for the kids to play a little and for the parents to chat over some nice food.  It was so hot in the gym though!

After the BBQ we went to baseball, the Husband took the Boy to his game and the Baby and I took the Girl to her's.  Tonight was the first time I took the Girl to one of her games this summer.  They had their 'Fun Night" where they played games and had a water balloon fight. She got wet!  It was actually a little cooler at the game (even in the sun).  The Baby played on a blanket while I tried to watch the Girl play her games.  She got a trophy and a popsicle which made the night very special for her.

When we got home the kids went into the pool, I bathed the Baby and the Husband hooked up a contraption that is supposed help warm the pool water.

June 18, 2012 - So Annoying!

So today was one of those days when I had a rough time. So instead of talking about all the great things that happened I am going to talk about what annoys me.

The Baby-he won't sleep unless he's in my arms. He his appetite is like a rollarcoaster and he is constantly pulling at my face and clawing at my mouth (this is normally my cue to trim his nails!). He screams to get what he wants.  He is so loud I am embarrased when I am at the mall.  I feel like I am "one of those moms" who can't control their kid.  I will get him what he wants, he really doesn't have to use that ear piercing screaming technique!!He also has this horrible habit of kicking both legs at the same time when lying on his back while I am dressing or changing him. We are always saying: "I don't remember then other kids doing that" and while I don't remember because I've blocked it of my memory or because it never happened, it doesn't make it any less annoying today!

The Boy- I am always asking the kids to watch the Baby while I cook, tidy and do laundry. Normally his attention span for playing with him is shorter than the Girls. Today was no exception. He didn't want to play with him until it was bedtime.

The Girl - she has some weird habits that annoy me too! She is always hungry at 9pm and never at mealtimes. We had English muffin pizzas for lunch and she only ate half an English muffin. I sent the other half for snack at school! She can never get her hair rinsed in the first try and is constantly distracted by everything and forgets what she is supposed to be doing.

As I type this on my iPod, i have come got the conclusion that I hate both this keyboard and the autocorrect!

June 17, 2012 - He sits!

This morning I picked up the Boy from his camp. I missed him lots and he was happy to see me. When I got home the Girl was also happy to see him, but he wasn't very nice to her and made her cry a few times when she tried to give him a gift. I explained to him about being gracious but it is a difficult concept to teach and I don't think he got it.

Today the Baby perfected getting from crawling to sitting and he managed to sit down from a standing position.   While he is now actively mobile, he is not taking to his crib very well. I'm not sure if it is all the co-sleeping we have been doing until now, or if it is just part of his personality. But he won't sleep in his crib consistently. Yesterday he napped for about one hour in his crib, but he wouldn't stay there at night. He cries like I am treating him horribly, and I can't listen to it! Then when I go in he panics if I don't pick him up. Last night I had to sleep in his room because the Husband wouldn't let me bring Baby to our room. I suppose this is a view of things to come if I can't get him to sleep in his crib for the entire night.

June 16, 2012 - The First Market

Today was the first week of the Brampton Farmer's Market.  We have been going to the market weekly from June to Thanksgiving for a number of years now.  The kids expect it, and they have a lot of fun shopping for local fruits and vegetables, but most of all we love spending the time with my parents each week.

This week we were pleasently surprised at the variety of produce available, normally this early in the market there are only a few things, but I assume the warm spring has been good for some of the crops.  We picked up some strawberries and some snap peas.

After the market we went home for lunch.  After lunch the Baby napped and the Girl went swimming.  The Boy was not home, so I was surprised that she went in by herself.  Afterwards, I tidied up a little, it doesn't look like it, but I did.

June 15, 2012 - Raccoon and Cub Camp

You will notice that there is no photo of the Baby today.  Today started with a little excitement.  I went to fix the Boy's lunch and noticed a critter in our yard.  He was eating eggs from the carton that he had in our yard.  He would grab and egg and proceed to the shed, where I assume he ate it and then he would reappear and repeat the process again.  So I sent the Boy for the camera and snapped a couple of shots of him.  The Husband was upstairs sleeping with the Baby, I showed him our new friend when he woke up.  The Husband went outside with a pot and spoon and attempted to scare the raccoon away.  Have you ever tried to scare a raccoon when there is food around?  It is not easy, they don't run far.  He ran all the way to one of our basement window wells and stayed there for a while.  Mostly, I wanted to get the shed closed so that he wouldn't decide to move in permanently.  I didn't notice the band around his middle until one of my friends commented on a photo that I posted on facebook.  If I had noticed I wouldn't have scared him away, I would have called animal control so they could remove the band.  I just hope the little guy is alright and has found some food to eat elsewhere.

Now to the reason there was a carton of eggs in our backyard (actually 2 cartons of eggs and three rolls of toilet paper).  My guess is the high school kids (we live next to a high school), were up to no good and were close to getting caught, so they ditched the evidence in the nearest yard, ours.  This caused the raccoon to find the eggs and temporaily call our shed home.  I'm just glad he didn't decide to go for a swim in the pool too!

So that was the first part of the day (all before 9am).  The rest of the day we spent packing up for cub camp and installing gates to prevent our now mobile Baby from getting into dangerous places.   I couldn't help but take a photo of my front lawn, if you look closely you will see the little grasslings growing.  Yeah for grass.  Until this year, I wasn't crazy about gardening, but after working on the lawn (with lots of help) I feel a little better about it, and I have a small sense of accomplishment for turning my brown dead front lawn into something pretty and hopefully lush.  We'll just see if I can maintain it.  Next task: vegetable garden in the back yard with the kids!

June 14, 2012 - Grasslings!!

Today I took the Girl to get "graduation" photos done.  The Boy had his done with the school in SK, so I wanted the Girl to have the same memory.  She did great at the photo shoot, (no surprise there) and the studio even asked to display one of her photos in the store.

My grass in the front yard has sprouted grasslings!  Yeah, thanks for your help Mom and Dad!  My lawn may look nice by the end of this month.

June 13, 2012 - Sleeping Peacefully...for the moment

I took today`s photo first thing this morning.  He was fast asleep in the bed beside me, as soon as the Husband got up to get dressed the Baby quickly took over the empty space.  How can something so small need so much room?

June 12, 2012 - Not Baby Friendly

I have discovered that my house is not baby proof.  What have I been doing for the last 8 months?  I guess I kind of forgot how things need to be when you have a mobile baby in your home.  Today I spent the afternoon tidying the family room and making it more baby friendly.  Bye-bye big kid toys....bye-bye coffee table books....bye-bye trinkets on the side table...bye-bye Wii games on the shelf.  The hardest thing is finding a balence between the Baby's safety and my big kids entertainment.  They need to have some things in the room to play with, but they can't be ever left lying around the room.  Polly pockets and Lego are deadly for a baby!  I found a large plastic container in the basement, that I put under my side table for them to keep a few things in.

The Husband put up the first of many gates.  This one is at the top of the basement stairs, which are right next to the family room, so pretty much at the most dangerous place when he spends most of his time playing in the family room!  The only issue with the gate: the Girl can't open it, so when she needs to go to the basement to play, someone (me) is going to have to open the gate for her!  Hopefully the other gates we put up will be easier for her to open.

June 11, 2012 - PA Day

Today was the last PA day of this school year. We spent having a picnic at the park, where the kids could play in the splash pad. We went with their Granny and GD it was a nice day. Just as we were leaving the park, the humidity started to rise, we left at just the right time. When we got home the kids went into our backyard pool. It isn't even 70 degrees yet, but they played in it for a good 20 minutes. I just put the Baby's feet in because it was really cold and I didn't want to get in!! Not yet anyway:)

June 10, 2012 - Pool party

Today we went to a friends house for their daughter's birthday party. It was a pool party. The kids had so much fun playing in the pool and it was nice to see our friends again.  I chose today's photo of the Baby because he just looks so happy.  I am not sure what he was laughing at, perhaps it was the cheese on his high chair, but he has such a great smile in this shot:)

June 9, 2012 - Baseball and Pasta

Today was the first day of the Boy's weekend baseball tournament.  He went two for three again, striking out once and getting one hit with a pitched ball.  He also got a hit from the tee.  He was excited again for the nit, and I was proud of him as normal.  It was kind of rainy today, and I found it very awkward to hold the Baby and the umbrella, and the camera and drink my coffee and watch the game all at the same time.  I think I need about three more hands to do that successfully.  Why is it that Mom's need to be able to multitask all the time?  It is exhausting!!
This afternoon after going grocery shopping, the Baby crawled.  Not only did he crawl forwards but he crawled quickly and I actually had to put up a gate. Now I am a little concerned about the fireplace pad, which is such a hazzard for him (it is made of concrete).  I need to figure out what to do about that!

There is anothe delima concerning the gate, I can either allow access for my older children to climb over the gate (this means putting the gate directly on the floor), or allow my cats to pass under the gate (putting the gate about 4-6 inches off the floor).  Both ways prevent the Baby from passing by the gate, byt there isn;t an option that allows access to both the kids and the cats!  Pumpkin (our orange tabby) cried for quite a while when she realized that she couldn't or wouldn't jump over the gate!!

Oh and I almost forgot, I gave the Baby pasta today and he loved it.  I found those tiny hollow cylindars and I cooked them past al dente and then tossed them in some olive oil and he had a great time eating them.  I don't think I give him enough credit when it comes to eating finger food.  He can eat bigger pieces than I realize!

June 8, 2012 - My First Garden

Today I had some time to work on the garden in the front of the house. It is going to take some time, but I hope I can have the front of the house looking better and stop bringing the home values down in the neighborhood. I had to try to repair some patches of grass where the grass wasn't growing. Thanks to my parents I had help to do all this. Plus they guided me in what to do. I hadn't really done much gardening, the last house there wasn't much to do, and I definately didn't have to repair any grass patches.

The Baby is definately cruising now. He is also sort of crawling. Kind of a one step forward and two steps back kind of thing!!  I just know it is a matter of time before he is moving all over the house and getting into everything.  His appetite also came back these past couple of weeks.  The week before vacation he wasn't eating very much, but this week he is eating everything.  He especially loves any food that potentially came from my plate.

June 7, 2012 - Mountain Climber

So the Baby is a climber. I wish he would practice this on pillows and toys but he'd rather use me to climb on. It gets annoying when he proceeds to suck on my shoulder and thighs in the process. I am hoping that the shoulder and thigh sucking stops when he finally cuts his tooth. The teething has been going on for months and it seems like he will never have a tooth.

Today it rained, really rained for about 5 minutes.  There was even small pea sized hail too.  The photo of the deck shows the hail, but unfortunately it isn't a great shot.  Today's photo of Baby shows him completely crashed out on the sofa next to me.  He slept here for about 20 minutes after sleeping for about an hour in our arms.

June 6, 2012 - Swim Up

Today the Baby had forward momentum. It wasn't pretty but he definately crawled in a forward direction.    This evening I put him down in the kitchen while I was tidying up a little bit.  He managed to back himself into the corner beside the fridge, and I couldn't help but say "Nobody puts Baby in the corner!".  So I had to take a photo.  It's funny now when he is on the floor trying to move, he doesn't get as upset about the 'tummy time' as he used to.  I'm not sure when exactly this change happened, but he used to hate it and he would cry immediately to be picked up!

The Husband fixed up the pool today and we started filling it with water. Of course the kids wanted to go into the pool after school. It was so bitterly cold. I have no idea what temperature the water is coming out of the garden hose, but it is cold. That didn't stop them, they played a while in about a foot of water and had some cold fun.

Tonight the Boy had his end of year party for Beavers. He also had his 'swim up' ceremony where he became a Cub. He was so excited and he even remembered the poem without being prompted too much.    The photo on the right is of the 'swim up' ceremony.  The blue tarp represents the river and the two cubs on the right are going to pass them a rope and help them acroiss the river to cubs.  It was cute.  The photo on the left is of the Boy and one of his leaders, Rainbow.

June 5, 2012 - Two for Three!!

Today was Tuesday, the husband made it home in time to take the Girl to t-ball and I went with the Boy to his game. I was hoping that he would have a better game this week and that hopefully he wouldn't use any foul language or make any finger gestures towards me this week!

He played in the outfield in the first inning and was distracted when a ball was hit to him. At bat (off the tee) he hit the ball and made it on base, but the next player hit into a fielders choice an unfortunately the Boy got out. In the second inning he played second base but didn't have a chance to field a ball. At bat he struck out. He was pretty upset but I tried to keep encouraging him. In the last inning he played in the outfield and he was pretty bored because he weeded the field around him. I couldn't yell at him because I was putting the Baby to sleep. At bat he hit the ball!!! I was so excited and relieved that he finally hit the ball because I don't know how I would have managed through another week and game encouraging him to keep trying!!
No one knows who wins the game, they don't keep score, but I'd like to think that the Boy's hit scored the winning run!!

I have only been to one of the Girl's games, but she is having lots of fun and posed for a photo as we were leaving the house.

June 4, 2012 - Check up

Today the Baby and I had a check-up at the breastfeeding clinic. The baby is 8 months old and weighs 18lbs and 4 oz. He is 68cm long. It was nice to hear that he is growing well and that he is about average (just below) the 50th percentile in weight and height. As a parent I am always wondering if I am feeding him enough, I was reassured today:). We also talked about weaning me from the domperidone. I am to drop a pill every 5 days for the next month to see if I can come off the medication soon.

I have been researching photo books on the internet. I want to do one of our vacation and eventually I want to do one of all my photos from my blog this year. I tried the Walmart one, unfortunately the book which allows text to be added to the pages only allows for 20 pages and I have about 300 favorite photos!!

I have also tried out the shutterfly one. This one is very cool!! I can do all the pages that I want and there are so many more page layouts and other embellishments that can be added to the pages.  Tomorrow I will check out the Costco and Blacks ones.

After school the kids and I went to the park. It was nice for them to get out of the house after all the cloudy and rainy days we'd had lateley.  Baby enjoyed his ride in the swing and the kids made friends with one of the neighbours while we were at the park.
