January 15, 2012 - ET is a sad movie

Today we took the kids to visit their Vavo.  This is our normal Sunday.  The Husband and the Boy go to church.   Then we all go to see Vavo.  It makes for a nice Sunday afternoon.  Today's photo (15/366) is of the Girl and the Baby with their cousin.

When we got home we decided to watch a movie together.  We decided on ET, the kids hadn't seen it yet, so we figured it would be a good movie to watch together.  I had forgotten how sad ET.  Attention: spoiler alert, if you haven't watched ET please don't read below, I don't want to give anything away.
Anyhow, the part of the movie when ET dies and Elliot is having a visit with ET's body, and he starts to cry is so sad.  The Girl (who is 5) was crying, and I thought that was so sweet.  She is a sensitive girl, and I knew as I was watching her cry during the movie (and comforting her) that she understood what the movie was about on a more "grown up" level.  She also started crying at the end when Elliot and ET are saying good-bye.  She asked a lot of questions about the person who played ET, and about the house, and why there was all the plastic inside it.  There were several questions about the plastic.   She wanted to know who played ET.  We had to explain that ET was like a puppet and wasn't played by an actor.   It had been so long since I had seen the movie, that I forgot how sad it was, and I wasn't prepared as a parent to hear the questions, and deal with the emotions of the kids.  I guess in the future, I should spend a little more time pre-screening the movies before we watch them as a family!
