May 29, 2012 - Whole Foods

Today I went to Whole Foods in search of good organic baby food for the Baby.  The store was great and we picked up a yummy salads and crab cakes for lunch, but there was a dismal supply of baby food in the store.  It was rather pathetic, for such a great grocery chain, where is all the baby food???Turns out the Baby likes the blended food, that is baby food with three or more purred foods mixed together.  Also, as I am typing this, it turns out that he likes to play with the keyboard too!  Making this blog entry rather difficult:) cup

May 28, 2012 - Hot!

Feels like we are still in Florida, it is so hot outside.  Baby isn't crazy about the heat, but at least he is drinking a lot of water.  We are on the quest for great organic food for baby.  I have been making some of my own food, but I have also discovered that he really likes blends of foods best.  I found some great food in the states called Ella's Kitchen.  But they are not available here.  There are less options here, and many of the foods here contain more than just the fruits and veggies in their products, the Ella's Kitchen food doesn't even have any water added, just a little lemon juice to help preserve the food.

I am going to venture out to Whole Foods tomorrow, hopefully it will be a successful trip:)

May 27, 2012 - Angel Care Rant/Opinion

Tonight was the first time we used the "tic" on our Angel Care monitor.  Yes, you heard it...our baby is nearly 8 months old and we never used the pad that tells us if he is still breathing or not.  There is a few reasons why it hasn't been used yet, and also why it was probably a splurge that I shouldn't have made for this baby.  First of all, Baby spent the first 6 months of his life either sleeping in our bed, the bassinett in our room, or his stroller, making it impossible to use the sensor pad.  Secondly, the one time I tried to use it, all kinds of alarms went off and we couldn't figure out how to turn them off.  When I say, "all kinds of alarms" I mean both the nursery unit (the one in his room) and the parent unit (the one in our room) were emiting very loud alarms.  I didn't want to risk using it again.  Tonight as the Husband was setting the crib at the lowest setting (little one is pulling himself up to as standing position), I looked at the sensor pad, and thought I should just try to use it again.

The moral of this post:  while for many people who are able to have their little one in his or her crib from day one, using the sensor pad would be ideal.  It definately would alleiviate any fears of SIDS etc, that all new parents have.  But for those who plan to co-sleep, this monitor is a waste of money.  In reality, I knew that we would be co-sleeping, I did this with my second child out of neccessity, I needed to be awake enough during the dare to chase after my two year old.  When it is your first child, you can nap when he does, but when it is your second (or third) that option isn't available to you, so I felt it was better for my sanity to co-sleep the second half of the night, with my second and third.  I actually love waking up with him next to me.  Most of the time he is in a happy mood and makes me start the day in a happy mood too!

May 26, 2012 - Cheese!

Today the Husband began to work on the pool pad that he is building for our pool.  Last year we placed the pool directly on the grass and it turned out that our back yard was more slanted than we had realized.  So this year, he is making a square frame for the pool which we will put sand and then styrofoam on top to make a soft place for the pool to stand.  Hopefully it works:)

We gave the Baby cheese for the first time, it was cute to watch him try to pick up the tiny pieces of cheese from his highchair.  He really prefers finger food to being spoon fed, and as his dexterity improves I know that he will become more efficient at feeding himself!

May 25, 2012 - Post #146!

I can't believe I have stuck to this for 146 posts already, 220 posts to go!  It has been so much fun and I will love to look back on the photos of my little ones and see the amazing things that we did this year.  It will also be such a great memory of Baby and how much he has changed and grown throughout the year.  Keeping this memory of all the little things is so important, because they are the things that are easy to forget, but most interesting to remember.

May 24, 2012 - Back to reality

This morning I woke up in my own bed.  It was weird at first, I had to briefly remember where I was.  We had a big mess of things to put away and a mountain of laundry to do.  Most of the stuff was put away by lunch time, but the mountain of laundry is still there.  My parents were coming for a visit in the afternoon, so we needed to get things semi-tidied before they arrived.

I took the kids to school after lunch and my parents arrived around 2pm for a photo slide show and some cuddles with the Baby.  Once the other kids came home we headed outside to enjoy the sunshine and have our fajitas on the patio.  I even managed to get the kids into bed by 9:00pm today!

May 23, 2012 - Day 12 - Travel Home:)

Today we got up bright and early to start our long journey home.  It is bittersweet to be heading home. On one side our fun vacation is over, on the other end we get to sleep in our own beds and get back into our routine at home.

We made our first stop in Maryland (after searching for gas at two different exits).  The Husband proclaimed that he did not like that state, but we really didn`t give it a fair shake.  We just picked two exits where the gas was not close to the interstate!

We stopped for lunch in Somerset, PA, which was along the Pennsylvania State Freeway.  We stopped at Wendy`s.  The food was great, but the restaurant was in poor repair and very dirty.  I wonder why, most other places we stopped along the highway were in much better condition.  Even the Starbucks across the road looked cleaner and more updated than the Wendy's.

Our next stop was at a rest stop between Pittsburgh and Erie, we let the kids out of the car to run around and burn off some of their energy.  Then it was back into the car until we got to the New York Interstate about 1/2 hour outside Buffalo.  We found a gas station and a Tim Horton's!  Seeing that Timmy's proved that we were getting closer to Canada and home, it was a nice sight!!

We crossed the border at Fort Erie with no problems.  He asked a few questions and sent us on our way.  We managed to do the Buffalo to Toronto leg without stopping.  When we arrived in Toronto, we dropped off the kids Aunt and had pizza and drinks before going home to Brampton.

It was late when we finally arrived home, so I decided to keep the Boy out of school in the morning, and just send him in the afternoon.

May 22, 2012 - Day 11 - Washington, DC

Today we visited Washington DC.  The roads to DC were very confusing, and the traffic was the heaviest we'd encountered during the entire vacation. Washington was the largest city by population that we visited, the population was about 562,000.  The landmarks sneak up on you as you approach DC.  We didn't see much until we were near the pentagon, then we started seeing the buildings, in the distance.

Once we crossed the Potomac River we were in the city, we drove around trying to get our bearings and figure out the streets while we tried to find parking close to the Lincoln Memorial.  We got lucky and packed up the stroller to go on a long walk around the tourist area of DC.   We visited the Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam War Memorial, World War II Memorial, White House, Washington Monument and the Jefferson Memorial.  It was a lot of walking and the kids did really well.  Once we got back to the car, we drove to the other end of the Mall and looked at the Capital Building and had dinner.

The Husband wanted to have dinner at `Tune In`which was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.  It was a bar, so getting the stroller in and out was quite a mission.  The food was alright, nothing special and according to the Husband, it was quite different then those featured on the show, which was a little disapointing.

Today`s photo of the Baby shows him standing in his stroller.  I guess the days of putting him in without the 5-point harness are over!  He got himself into this position all by himself!

After dinner, we went back to the hotel to put the kids to bed and pack up.

May 21, 2012 - Day Ten - Travel to Richmond, VA

Today we left Savannah, Georga at about 9:30am after having the Clarion's continental breakfast.  We knew that there was a long drive ahead of us, our plan was to make it all the way to Richmond, Virginia by the evening.  Traffic was light and the Husband's foot was heavy.  We stopped three times! For lunch, we stopped at the South Carolina welcome centre and were stalked by Canada geese.  Then we stopped for two bathroom/coffee breaks before arriving at the Comfort Inn in Richmond at 5:30pm.

The room was great, with two bedrooms, and our room had a king sized bed and our own washroom.  The other room contained two queen-sized beds and another washroom.  The kids and their Aunt shared the other room, and the Husband, the Baby and myself shared the king sized bed.  There was plenty of room in the big bed for the three of us, and there was even room in the bed when the Girl crawled into bed with us during the night!

When we arrived we rushed off to dinner at Shoney's, I enjoyed my bacon cheeseburger and the kids liked their pasta.  The Husband had chicken fried steak and a strawberry sundae for dessert.  After dinner we went for a swim before hitting our beds for a good night sleep before our big day in Washinton the next day.

May 20, 2012 - Day Nine- Happy Birthday Husband!!

Today was the Husband's birthday.  We had to leave the house by 11am, so of course the morning was rushed.  We got out by about 10:30am, ahead of schedule.  It was probably the first time all week, that we'd been ahead of schedule!!

We stopped off at Target to pick up some more of "Ella's Kitchen" organic baby food.  At our local grocery store at home, there isn`t the variety of organic baby food that I can find everywhere in Florida.  Ella`s food came in these very convienent pouches, and the Baby enjoyed eating directly out of the pouch.  I found it very easy to feed him on the go, because there were no bowls or spoons to clean up!

After Target we headed off to Jacksonville to visit the Husband`s cousins and have lunch at their house.  It was a very nice visit and it was nice to have a home cooked meal while we were on the road!  We visited for a couple of hours and then we were back on the road to our hotel in Savannah, Georgia.  On the way to Savannah we stopped at a gift shop just before the Georgia border and picked up some key chains, salt water taffy and other small souvineers.

We got to the hotel aroung 7pm and checked in.  We went for a swim and then ate the leftover chinese food for dinner.  Everyone fell asleep early because the beds were so comfortable, and next thing we knew it was the morning and we had another long drive ahead of us!

May 19, 2012 - Day Eight - 11th Anniversary

Today was our anniversary, we didn't have much planned for our last day in the house.  We visited the Premium Outlet Mall and TJ Max.  The outlet mall was alright, but I didn't find there were too may deals.  TJ Max was pretty cool, but it is like Winners, and you need to go every day to find the deals and anything you might like.  I bought a coffee mug and a bathing suit for the Girl.  The Husband found a pair of shorts and a nice top.

After shopping we headed back to the house to swim in the pool and order chinese food for dinner.  After dinner we packed up and went to bed.  Today the Baby waved hello/bye for the first time, it was so cute.  Even when I was trying to feed him and put him to sleep he was lying next to me smiling and waving at me, it was adorable and annoying at the same time.

May 18, 2012 - Day Seven - Clearwater Beach!!

This morning we got up slowly and got into the car to visit Clearwater Beach.  The drive was about 2 hours long, but it was a part of Florida we hadn't visited yet, and it was quite beautiful.  We took a longer ride to the beach and the more direct route back.  This allowed us to go over two large bridges, which I find interesting, even if the kids won't look up from their movie and look outside of the car!!

The beach itself was pretty, the sand was warm and white and the water was so warm, it must have been close to 90 degrees in the shallow water. The kids met another little boy and played with him in a very shallow pool near the peir.  The Baby wasn't as thrilled with the Gulf as he was with the pool, I think he got splashed one too many times!

We had dinner at Crabby Bills on a reccomendation by the visitors centre.  It was really yummy.  We shared a plate of fried alligator with infernal hot sauce (yummy but a little hot for me), and chips and guacomole (delicious).  I had a special that started with clam chowder and then had two very crabby crab cakes.  For dessert, my special came with a large molten lava cake.  I shared it with the kid because I was so full!

May 17, 2012 - Day Six - Harry Potter and the Hulk

Today we went to Universal Studios Island of Adventure. It is the newest Universal Studios theme park and it was pretty great. The park is geared to older kids and I have to admit there was more for my 7 year old than my 5 year old. I thoroughly enjoyed the rollar coasters. Hulk was fantastic. The Harry Potter area was amazing, I felt like I was in Hogsmede! The kids and I had fun on the Jurassic park water ride, the fall at the end was thrilling!

We also had Butterbeer, which was so sweet, cold and delicious.  I rode on the Harry Potter Experience, Dragon Duel and the Hulk using the single rider line, and I had no wait time at all.  It is an awesome way to do the rides, especially when the rest of your group is too chicken to ride the big coasters with you.  The Dragon Duel in Harry Potter had an amazing first climb and drop.  Plus you were riding with your feet hanging down, which is always a fun way to ride a really high coaster.  The Hulk ride was very long and definately thrilling.  It was fast yet it seemed as though each of the turns was in slow motion and you could tell that you were upside down!  It also dips down very low and goes through a tunnel of fog, which is brief but refreshing.  It wasn't as long a day as Disney was, but I think we all appreciated that!

May 16, 2012 - Day Five - Relax and Shopping

Today we did a little shopping at the local Target and JC Penny.  I was excited by the sheer variety of organic baby food available at Target, and purchased some for the Baby to try.  Target also had a great selection of women's wear, and I managed to pick up a few tops for the summer.  The Girl got a purse and the Boy got the Sims 3, the revised version of Sims 2, which he has been playing for a few weeks now.

We spent the afternoon in the pool before it started to rain.  We enjoyed a roast chicken dinner and watched a movie.   All in all a wonderful vacation day!

May 15, 2012 - Day Four - DISNEY!!!

Today we went to Disney World. It was so much fun! I don't know who enjoyed it more, me or the kids! I went on Space Mountain with the Boy, and Splash Mountain! After Splash Mountain the Girl said"that's what I'm talking about!" it had to be the funniest line of the day and possibly the entire week!
My favorite part was the wishes fireworks at the end of the night. It looked really neat projected onto the castle. The worst part of the day was trying to leave after the show. It was so crowded! The kids did pretty well considering how long of a day we had. Even the Baby was fairly good.  The photo of the castle to the left is coloured for Rapunzel.  While the Girl didn't get to meet Rapunzel or Ariel, I think she still had a lot of fun. The Baby managed to fall asleep on my shoulder during the show at the end of the night, and stay asleep during the fireworks.  Both kids were exhausted after such a long day, and the Girl fell asleep in the stroller on the way to the car.  We found out that she fits into the Baby's stroller (barely).
Disney was definately an experience, and I am glad that the kids and I got to go.  I don't think I would enjoy making it an annual trip, it is just too expensive.  I can't believe it is about $90 per person to get into Disney World, plus $14 for parking and all the other money for gifts and pins.  The Boy decided he was into the pin trading, and after purchasing a lanyard and some pins to trade, along with a few extra pins, we spent about $150 in pins for both kids.  The Boy managed to trade his pins so that he would have a collection of Mickey Mouse pins.  The Girl traded (with assistance) her pins to have all "princesses".

We got home and it was close to midnight, after putting the kids to bed, we had a glass of wine and went to sleep ourselves!  A big day of shopping was ahead of us, but we planned to sleep in first!!

May 14, 2012 - Day Three - Character Breakfast

Today was our first full day in the house. We had a reservation for a character breakfast with the kids. Our breakfast was at the Grande Floridian Resort and Spa. We met Alice, Belle, Pooh, Tigger and Mary Poppins. We also talked to a lady in the gift shop about the pin lanyards and found out that the kids can trade pins with employees.

The Grand Floridian Resort was beautiful.  It is one of the most expensive hotels on the Disney Resort, rooms run from $400 to $1000 per night.  Once we walked up to the main entrance we could tell why.  It had a southern look to it, the decor contained wicker furniture and marble floors and decor.

In the afternoon we went to get some groceries. I was shocked at some of he prices and how much cheaper they are in the states. Gas is about $3.50 per gallon.  We also purchased 12 Corona's for $11 and two bottles of wine (2 litres) for $8 each.  This was all at Walmart!!

One thing I wish we had in Canada was beer and wine at regular stores, it is just so much more convienent and saves the extra trip to the beer store or LCBO.  However I did find out that the state of Florida does not have a system to return beer and wine bottles, they normally just put their bottles in the recycling bin.

When we got back to the house we all went for a swim.  The private pool in the yard was cool, but managable, and even the Baby enjoyed some time in the water.

May 13, 2012 - Day Two

Today we had breakfast at the Best Western in Statesville North Carolina, and headed out on the road by about 9:30am.  We had a long drive ahead of us, with over 600 miles to cover until we get to the house in Florida.  We drove through South Carolina, and into Georga.  We decided to have lunch in historic downtown Savannah.  It was so beautiful, I really could have stayed there for a whole weekend, there was so much to see and do.  It was  a little rainy so we had our lunch and did a little shopping before heading back out onto the road.  We had lunch at a place called "One Eyed Lizzy's", we had a very nice mexican lunch.  I had fajitas and the kids each had quesadillas and soft taco's.  It was very yummy.

We didn't get into the house until after 10pm, we were tired and later than we expected. The kids still managed a swim in the pool before going to bed.

The house is very pretty, nice high ceilings with four good sized bedrooms. I especially like the two master suites!

May 12, 2012 - Day One

We spent today in the car.  We left the house around 3:20am and arrived at our destination at 6:15pm.  It was a long day, but the kids did amazing.  I am thankful for that.  Even the Baby did pretty well, considering he spent most of the day in his car seat.  I am thankful, for my wonderful husband, he drove most of the day, only taking a short break while I relieved him.  The scenery was beautiful, and I found it especially pretty when we were in Virginia and West Virginia.

One scary thing that happed today was while we were in West Virginia.  We were driving along, and a car zooms past us and then gets in front of us and slows down.  We change lanes and then he gets in front of us again.  This happened for about 10 miles before he finally chose someone else to play with and eventually got off the high way.  The one silver lining to the whole somewhat scary experience, was when we stopped at a light and the second car that he was playing with rolls down his window and apologizes to us for him (I suppose on behalf of their state).

For breakfast, we went to the Dor-Stop Restaurant in Pittisburgh, PA.  They were featured on an episode of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.  The restaurant is known for their pancakes and french toast, and they didn't dissapoint.  I had chocolate chip pancakes and they were amazing.

At the Welcome Centre in North Carolina.
For lunch we stopped at McDonald's in Summerside which was in West Virginia.  For Dinner we went to Carolina BBQ, in Statesville, NC.  We were pretty excited about going to a real southern BBQ restaurant.  The Husband had brisket and he enjoyed it, my Sister-In-Law had the ribs and said they were good.  I had the chopped pork, unfortunately I was disapointed, the pork was dry and lacked a hot sauce.  There was sauce on the table, however the mild wasn't very flavourful and the hot was odd, and a little watery.  I did have corn nuggets, sweet potato sticks and hush puppies.  I had never had any of those items, and I have to admit the corn nuggets were my favourite.  They were little drops of battered creamed corn.  Very reminiscnet of a state fair, but very yummy.  The hush puppies were kind of like a deep fried bread.  They had a distinct onion flavor, but that was about all.  The sweet potato sticks were good, mashed sweet potatos that were fried to be crispy on the outside and soft and creamy on the inside.  Very nice.  I know that my dinner wasn't at all low calorie, but I did enjoy my southern dinner.

 I can't wait for tomorrow!

May 11, 2012 - Teething Issues

Today the Baby started to really have teething issues.   He is having a difficult time, and will often cry for long periods.  We got him some ambusol, and this works a bit, however he wasn't interested in eating much today. I hope this is from the teething.

May 10, 2012 - Last Day of School for the Week

Today was the kids last day of school, there is a PA day tomorrow.  I am excited for the long weekend and for our vacation on Saturday.  My parents came over to play with the kids, while I did some packing and cleaning.  I am so grateful for their help and support with the kids and the kids love spending time with them.  My Dad even took the time to mow the lawn.  The kids also gave me their Mother's Day presents.  It was a little early, but since we are away for Mother's Day, they figured they should give it to me today.  The Girl gave me a potted plant, which will hopefully grow a flower.  The Boy made me a candle holder with a jar and some tissue paper glued on the outside.  The were both very proud of their presents, and they mean so much to me when I receive them.

May 9, 2012 - Wednesday

Today the Boy had a meeting with his coach, where he got his baseball schedule and uniform.  The Boy is nervous this year, it is the first year of ball where he will have to hit a pitched ball.  Hitting the ball off a T is one thing, but actually hitting a pitched ball will involve some practice and hand eye coordination.  Two things that the Boy is not interested in doing.  He feels as though he should just know everything, so it is not important to practice.  On Monday I mailed our Mother's Day present to my Mother-in-Law, and she called to say she received the gift today.  The Baby was listening to the message playing on the machine, and he made a huge smile, I just know that he recognized her voice.

May 8, 2012 - Let baseball season begin

Today was the Girl's first t-ball night of the season.  It is so great to see her excited about a sport.  She is the type of girl who really likes 'girly' things and last night she was so excited to play ball again.  I hope she puts forth a really great effort and learns some new skills this year.  It is going to be an interesting summer with both kids playing on the same night at roughly the same time.  The poor baby is going to be lugged back and forth between parks every Tuesday night!

May 7, 2012 - Mother Daughter Dinner

Tonight was the Girl's end of year mother-daughter dinner.  We went to Swiss Chalet and had dinner with her Sparks and Brownie group.  It was nice to spend time alone with her, and nicer to be out of the house without the Baby.  Don't get me wrong, I love all of my kids, but sometimes you just need a break!  Earlier in the day the Baby was crying and really upset.  It had been going on for hours and I was near my witts end.  So dinner with the Girl was a well needed break.  While I was gone the Husband took the day's photo of the Baby!

May 6, 2012 - Getting lost in Hamilton

This morning we picked up the Boy from camp.  He had a wonderful time.  He did crafts, had a campfire and got to sleep in a tent.  In the afternoon we went to Hamilton to visit the Husband's Aunt and Uncle.  It was a really nice visit, once we got there.  For the second time in as many days, I got lost again!  This time at least we were in a big city, not on country back roads, so it was much easier to pick up a map and ask for directions.

May 5, 2012 - Beaver Camp

This morning I took my big Boy to camp.  It is only for one night, but when he's not home to be tucked in at night it seems like forever to me.  In the afternoon I gave blood for the first time since the Baby was born, and hung out with my Girl.

After dinner we went for a walk to the park because it was such a beautiful evening.  I took a photo of the Girl blowing on dandilions and the Baby in a swing.  I love photographing the kids and I even managed to get the Husband to stop for a photo tonight:)

I got lost on the way to camp, getting confused by the sideroads and lines that exsist outside of the city.  I was pretty lost and I really missed my GPS.  I got one for Valentine's Day last year, and it was one of my favourite things. However it was stolen from my van while it was parked in our drive way in the fall, and I have missed it ever since.

May 4, 2012 - Trying to get on all fours!

I noticed today that the Baby has been rocking back and forth to try and reach for things. He is trying to get on all fours but can't figure out how to do it. I find it amusing!

Ok funny of the day: while listening to Michael Jackson on the radio in the car.
The Girl: is this thriller?
Me: no, but it's the same singer.
The Girl: But, he's dead.
Me: yes, he is.
The Girl: But Justin Beiver's not dead.
Me: no he is not.
The Girl: I'm going to marry him!

Oh, I can't wait until she is a teenager!!

May 3, 2012 - My soon to be mobile baby!

So I have notice the last few days, Baby has been trying to get up on his knee from a sitting position. He is fine if he has something to hold on to, but if he is stick with nothing then he cries until I sit him back down again!

Today during his bath he had another first. It was the first time he cried when I took a toy away. He has a couple toys that he plays with in the bath, when I am finished washing him, I put the toys away and drain the tub. Well tonight he freaked out, and I had to let him keep the toy until he fell asleep!

May 2, 2012 - McHappy Day & New Window

Today we had the window installed in our family room.  I am happy how it turned out and the room is going to look great and the window is step one of the renovation. The family room will be the first room that we actually re-decorate since we have moved into the house.  The plan is to do the floor and get a new sectional sofa for the room.  The walls will be redone, as right now they are just paneling and stucco and they definately need to be updated.

Here is the window/family room before:

This is the window after from the inside:

This is the window after, from the outside.  I really like the white vertical siding, it looks really sharp.

After the window install we went to McDonald's for McHappy Day.  I can't believe how much the kids ate.  The Girl loved the new happy meal that comes with a teeny tiny yogurt.  She ate everything, and they both even ate their dessert after a brief play in the playplace.
